The 'Guardians' painting is currently the best example of Louie's trend-setting merger of cultural themes. The primary design consists of 2 Chinese Guradian Lions (aka Fu Dogs) crested using a mix of Northwest Coast and Coast Salish design elements. A closer look revels three eagles, each one representing a stage of personal development.
Louie decided to explore this theme after recognising the overlapping (common) purpose of guardian lions and Coast Salish house posts, which both identify and protect important spaces.
The original 8' x 8' painting was created in 2013 for the Wing Luke Museum's "Cultural Confluences: People of Native and Asian Heritage" exhibition. In 2015, Louie was commissioned by the city of Seattle to paint a variation of this design on a bentwood box for Xi Jinping, the President of China.
We are proud to announce a new, larger version of this giclée print, which was created after each panel of the 8 panels composing the 'Guardians' painting was individually scanned. It is of such high quality that the wood grain on the original panels, as well as the subtle black on black patterns in the eyes and under the wings of the upper eagle, are clearly visible.
